Puntarenas was discovered by the Spanish conqueror Hernan Ponce de Leon in 1519; when he arrived to the “Golfo de San Lucas” at the present time, Gulf of Nicoya. Today is called “El Puerto” (The Port), or “La Perla de Pacifico” (Pacific Pearl), first was known as Villa Bruselas (1524). This attractive peninsula formed by many thousands of years of geomorphological sedimentation caused by the River Barranca (Gully), Puntarenas city is the head city of this province, the biggest in Costa Rica.
The territory was inhabited by two main big Amerindians groups, the Huetars central to southern side, and Chorotegas central to northern side. This land is well known because it’s great productive potential and its friendly people. The origin of this province name is due to its geo conformation, (sand point) a sandy point, no more than 3 m above the sea level.

Only 400 meter wide and almost 17 kilometers long this incredibly important port city is responsible of receiving thousands of visitors every year, besides running a massive fishing industry, the visitors from different cruiser ships every year make of this city one of the most popular destinations of the pacific coast. Founded in 1858 as a province Puntarenas, the place was aforementioned in 1720 a city surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and an extremely biodiversity mangrove forest is definitely a family destination blessed with one of the longest beach extension in the Pacific side of the country.

We’ll visit the central park, the Catholic Temple, also the market. Then we go back to Puntarenas, to put the cherry on top of the pie. There in Puntarenas downtown, we got the Municipal market and all the different items you can find, lots of seafood, vegetables and fruits, then the Catholic Church, the mangrove side that starts in La Angostura (The Narrowing). La Punta (the Point) the extreme edge of the peninsula, and the islands of the Gulf. This the right tour, with right port taste.
