The Tortuga Island is about 120 hectares, maintained as a protected forest. The island was listed as one of the best 5 beaches in Latin America. The snorkelers are able to see gobies, sea anemone, starfish, parrotfish, angelfish, damsels, and puffer fish, and some more beautiful fish schools. The scuba divers may observe yellowtails, white tip reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, grunt, octopi, sea turtle, frog fish and several species of eels. Lucky divers may also see as well as large schools of cow-nosed rays, whale sharks, false killer whales. Three shipwrecked boats, offering unique diving experience with average visibility from 6 to 15 m (20 to 45 feet). The rainy season is May through November providing the best conditions for scuba diving, while snorkeling is good all year around.

Day tours to the island depart from San Jose, Puntarenas, Jaco, Playa Herradura, Tambor, Mal Pais, Montezuma and from Curu Wildlife Refuge. Travel time may vary by destination and means of transport.
The tours normally include roundtrip transportation, bilingual guide, snorkeling or scuba diving, snacks, and a delicious lunch on the beach. Some tour operators include complimentary wine and fresh ceviche
Note: All of these activities are optional and cost extra, unless specified in tour packages. Snorkeling and scuba diving are the island’s biggest attractions. There are jet skis and kayaks for rent, banana boat tours, horseback riding, a small zip line tour and nature hiking trails across the island.
